Visa helps ease pain at the pump

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The average price of gas is over $4 per gallon and it is having an affect on almost everyone, including gas stations. In many parts of the country, gas stations are giving cash discounts on gas purchases, limiting the amount of gas purchased using a credit card or forbidding the use of credit cards for gas purchases all together. Accepting credit cards on gas purchases incurs transaction fees that can almost entirely eliminate any profit gas station owners would normally receive. Sometimes these fees are passed onto consumers who end up paying a lot more to fill up our tanks.

Visa Inc. has announced it will reduce transaction fees charged to gas stations. Typically, the fees are a set percentage of the transaction amount and every time gas goes up, so do credit card transaction fees.  Visa has said it will lower fees by 14 percent on a $60 fill-up, 43 percent on a $120 fill-up and cap debit card fees at $0.95. This move by Visa is similar to a move made last year by competitor MasterCard who capped its transactions fee on gas purchases of $50 or more. Both independent and oil company owned gas stations will benefit from the lower credit card transaction fees. Visa hopes these savings to gas stations will ultimately be passed on to consumers.

Credit card companies like Visa and MasterCard have faced increasing pressure recently from legislators over credit card transactions fees. Currently, proposed legislation in the House would require Visa and MasterCard to negotiate credit card transaction fees directly with merchants.

To start savings money on all your purchases, including gas purchases, start using a cash back credit card or a gas reward credit card. These credit cards let you earn up to a 5% cash rebate on all your gas purchases and more.

Gas station credit cards can offer big savings

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Are you feeling the pain at the pump each time you fillup? Last week AAA reported the nation’s average gas price at just under $4 per gallon - a new record high. With record high gas prices and the average gas price of more than $4 in fourteen states and Washington D.C. has many people searching for ways to save money on gasoline. One way is to check out credit card offers from your local gas stations.

If you regularly purchase your gas from a national or regional gas station chain, then the company most likely offers some kind of credit card that offers percentage or a set dollar amount off each purchase or gallon of gas. Many gas reward credit cards offer savings of up to 10% for the first 90 days and 5% thereafter on your gas purchases. You can also earn additional cash back on other purchases you make with the card. Be sure to compare the terms and conditions of each card to find the card that suits you the best.

Another easy way to save money on gas purchases is buying discounted gift cards. Gift cards can also be used to buy gas for additional savings. Buy discounted gift cards from Marathon gas stations for an additional savings of 4%. Check your local gas station to see if they offer similar discounted gift cards.

Doing your own credit card comparison of gas rebate credit cards can offer you significant savings on gas purchases. The savings can really add up and ease the pain at the pump too.

An easy way to fight high fuel prices

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

This week executives from the world’s largest oil companies are being grilled by lawmakers as both gasoline and diesel prices reached record highs during the month of March. Automakers also posted double-digit declines in SUV and pickup truck sales citing higher gasoline prices as a contributing factor. Higher gasoline and diesel prices do not affect just our wallets when we fill up our vehicle, but also increase transportation costs for food and the other goods we buy. Combine this with what many view as a weakening or slowing economy and it makes life financially difficult for millions of Americans. Something must be done on our part individually until things get better.

Most of us probably have a decent commute ahead of us at the beginning and the end of each work day. This commute simply cannot be avoided and you may try to save money on gas by car pooling with a co-worker (or someone else) or utilizing public transportation. Getting to work is a necessity and the only area in which you may be able to cut back on your gas use is by limiting recreational or other non-essential driving. If most or all of your driving is essential, there is one thing you can still do to help save money on your gas expenses. The solution is to choose a cash back credit card that earns cash back on every purchase you make, including your gas purchases.

Using a cash back credit card for all your gas purchases can help you earn a 1%-5% or more cash back reward every time you use the card. Your cash back reward is either sent to you by check every time you accrue a specific amount set by your card issuer or will be credited to your bill automatically each month. Most cash back credit cards don’t have an annual fee and you can use the card just like you would a debit card and still be able to pay at the pump. You can earn even more cash back by charging all the other purchases you make that you may normally pay with cash, debit or check. Just remember to always pay your balance in full each month and never charge more on your credit card than you could pay off each month or have cash for.

There are also several gas rebate credit cards which offer additional cash or other bonuses on your gas or diesel fuel purchases. Just by switching the form of payment you use to make all your regular purchases can add up to big savings every year. Who knows? Maybe you could even use your cash rebate to go on an extra trip in the car!
