The MasterCard Extended Warranty - my story
Monday can sometimes be a difficult day as we, along with so many of you, go back to work after a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. This Monday was no exception as I prepared myself to once again sit in front of the computer screen for at least another eight hours that day. However, my work day never materialized as the computer monitor quickly turned into nothing but a bright black haze on the screen. I tried changing the configuration through the controls on the screen itself with no luck so I tried restarting the computer with the same result. I wasn’t positive if it was my monitor or the video card, but after several hours of calling friends, I was able to locate a spare monitor to test the system with.
After confirming that my monitor was in fact the culprit, I wanted to see what the terms of the warranty were and if I could somehow have the monitor covered under the manufacturer warranty. Unfortunately, the manufacturer warranty had already expired and I wasn’t about to go out and buy a new right away because I knew I had purchased this monitor with a credit card. My Platinum MasterCard provided an extended warranty on any item I purchased with the card for up to an additional one year. The Monday this happened was only four days before that extended warranty expired. I called MasterCard immediately and they turned me over to their claims service department.
Working with MasterCard to have my monitor covered was easy and straightforward. They needed some basic information and paperwork to prove that I purchased the monitor with my MasterCard. My experience to get this required paperwork was probably a little more involved than most because I did not have copies of some of the paperwork MasterCard requested (receipts, etc.). The difficult item to fulfill was that of a repair estimate because not many stores will repair computer monitors due to the cost of replacing a monitor being generally cheaper than to repair. After providing all the necessary paperwork and waiting a few weeks, MasterCard sent me a check for the cost to repair my computer monitor.
Instead of having my computer monitor repaired I decided to purchase a new monitor with the extended warranty repair check. This new monitor will be bigger and better than the last one, but you can bet I’ll use that same cash back credit card I used before. Next time you make a big or small purchase, definitely consider using a one of your credit cards to take advantage of the extended warranty coverage if necessary. Be sure to check with your credit card issuer to see if your credit card offers such coverage. If your current credit card doesn’t have offer extended warranty coverage, use our website for a credit card comparison to find one that does.
